Political Cartoons

I often like to look at political cartoons in the Sunday paper of the New York Times. However, often I feel that I don't understand the cartoons. Either I'm not up on the latest news that the cartoon is depicting or the cartoon does not give enough information as to what it is trying to say. US News has compiled all of their cartoons from this past month: http://www.usnews.com/opinion/photos/political-cartoons-january-2011. My favorite cartoons are #'s 11, 34 , 46, and 48. Something that I am thinking about though is, can political cartoons count as a news source? They often present one side of a story, but as we discussed in class,  news reports often do as well. Thoughts?

  1. A good point. I think cartoons are basically op-eds, when you get down to it. They present information but from the perspective of the cartoonist, and they try to make a point using the drawing.
