"Home Connections"

Take a look at this very powerful video from The New York Times website called "Home Connections". This video introduces you to soldiers and their families who are using modern technology such as webcams  to stay in touch while overseas. They fill each other in on their day to day lives and discuss topics that they would if they were face to face. It is very interesting though to hear both the pros and cons of communicating this way while at War from the perspective of soldiers and their families.

Do you think the pros override the cons or vice versa?

Pictured here is a solider in Afghanistan. Because of Skype, this solider in Afghanistan coached his wife through childbirth and was "there" to "meet" his daughter.

  1. Great find. I'm inclined to think this is a good thing, but it's clearly a tricky subject.

  2. I always thought that this sort of communication while overseas was a good thing, but this video made me very aware of it's disadvantages as well... very scary feeling if you can't reach a loved one

  3. Wow, that was very powerful. All sorts of technology have pros and cons, and in the army it is no different. It definitely is gratifying and less worrisome to hear from your loved ones often. However, like the woman in the video explains, once you expect to hear from them often, and for some reason you don't for longer than usual, the nerves are higher and people expect the worst.

  4. I think this is a great way for people to "see" their loved ones overseas. Today, skype and other online communication is used for families and friends not only overseas but used also for those within the same city. I think this is a powerful yet useful tool for soliders to use. Although it may have disadvantages, i think there are more pros. Without video chatting, how else would love ones be able to "see" each other as often?
